Recently it has been implemented in Ubuntu linux KDE and GNOME (partial) desktop environments a kind of folder metadata labeling with special metadata.desktop files. These files display a content (eg a name) which is not the actual file name. They also may contain other useful information for classifying the related folder. Here is their structure:

You may wish to get rid of some templates in the contextual menu in KDE. The best practice would be removing the package installing those templates, however this is not always possible due to dependency problems.

Strigi on kubuntu 9.10 / KDE 4.3 ppa seems to have some problems starting. It first shows this error whenever you try to enable it: The name org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstrigiservice was not provided by any .services file if you first enable Nepomuk and then also tick the Strigi it will then prompt you this error: service failed [...]

in KDE4 with dolphin file manager, and ark compression manager program installed, you have a contextual menu that enables you to simply zip and unzip your files. Unfortunately its default compression file formats are a bit weired and you will pretty soon feel the need to tweak them. Here is how:
