eee-control is so far the best utility for controlling Eee PC hardware under Linux.
It definitely does its job, instead of the now obsolete not-working-at-all eee-applet program, and has is even better than eeepc-tray, whose development has now been explicitly stopped by its author, for a couple of reasons:

GNOME power saving settings has only a minimum part of its features available to be tweaked through the graphic applet in System -> Preferences -> Power Management. The vast majority of them are instead tweakable through gnome configuration editor:

What is a Runlevel (Wikipedia)
on Ubuntu (being Debian based) starting from 6.10 (Edgy Eft) Upstart is used as a replacement for the traditional init-process. However traditional init scripts and Upstart’s SysV-rc compatibility tools are still used to start most services and emulate runlevels.
