Starting from next Ubuntu version Karmic 9.10 new GRUB2 boot loader in installed by default. GRUB2 comes with a bunch of technical enhancements, most notably support for new filesystems, a modularized settings configuration, recovery support and indeed better background image support.

Conky developers have added a bunch of cool new features in recent versions (direct managing of nvidia GPU data/clock/temp, audacious media player support, entropy indicator, ecc.), however the version shipped with Ubuntu is dated august 2008. Do you dare compiling it by yourself?

Despite the slightly higher resolution (800 vs 768) vertical space is always a bit constrained on widescreens. This is even more noticeable with Gnome which has two panels, at the top and at the bottom, that use at minimum size 50 pixels both.
