Fix for OpenOffice Writer bad screen redraw refresh
OpenOffice Writer and compiz Desktop Effects + nVidia 3D driver nvidia has long been buggy in redrawing / refreshing the page when you edit or simply scroll it up and down.
The bug is actually not of OpenOffice Writer but instead concerns compiz and nvidia propietary drivers. A workaround exists, here is how to enable it:
first install compizconfig-settings-manager
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
then launch the applet from System -> Preferences -> CompizConfig Settings Manager navigate to Utility section and click on Workarounds plugin. Inside enable (tick) “force syncronization between X and GLX”.
That’s it! These changes are applied immediately.

Con i drivers nvidia, gli effetti desktop compiz abilitati e l’accellerazione hardware di OpenOffice Writer abilitata potrete notare dei problemi nell’aggiornamento / ridisegnamento della pagina mentre modificate il contenuto della stessa o scorrete il vostro documento.
Il problema non è esattamente di OpenOffice Writer ma riguarda piuttosto compiz ed i driver propietari nvidia. Esiste una soluzione al problema, ecco come attivarla:
innanzitutto installate compizconfig-settings-manager
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
avviate l’applicazione da Sistema -> Preferenze -> CompizConfig Settings Manager navigate sulla sezione Utility e cliccate sul plugin Workarounds. Qui abilitate (spuntate) la voce “force syncronization between X and GLX”.
Ecco fatto! I cambiamenti sono immediatamente operativi.

Yes this works on Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 on my Dell latitude e6400 with NVIDIA Quadro NSV 160M.

Hello,
i am facing this sort of problem for too long. the workaround helps but isn’t enough for heavy “windowing” and tabbing. When will there be a final solution?
