How to open and disassemble an HP Pavilion laptop

Probably the main reason I consider HP Pavilion laptops worth buying is that they can be opened and disassembled very easily. This enables you (or your local computer repair shop) to perform a whole set of maintenance activities and to upgrade most parts without needing to send the laptop to some far HP authorized center. This post contains pictures of all the disassembling process I performed on a friend’s HP Pavilion DV6000 series laptop  in order to replace its noisy faulty fan. You may click on each picture to enlarge it.

Benefits of this capability are:

  • time saving (you only need to wait for the spare parts to arrive, but in the meantime you can still use your computer)
  • privacy aware (you may be willing to avoid sending your laptop with your hard disk and all your sensible data inside)
  • knowledge fostering (by experiencing how your machine is internally designed you may stimulate your curiosity and have a more in depth knowledge of the way it works)
  • money saving:
    • you may buy spare parts to whatever reseller you want
    • you may avoid paying expensive technicians’ labour
    • you may avoid throwing away your laptop simply because one cheap component is broken (such as the fan).

In my case actually happened my Pavilion laptop CPU fan got broken and started making a very annoying scratching noise. Replacing it enabled me to only spend 10€ and get back my laptop more silent than ever before!

Disclaimer: despite being relatively easy, disassembling a laptop is still a challenging task for unexperienced people. Breaking some of the internal parts of the computer while handling them is pretty easy (such as the zero insertion force cables) and there is always the risk of electrocuting some IC chips because of electrostatic energy. Furthermore remember opening yourself your laptop voids the warranty. Therefore if you do not feel comfortable at doing it yourself please ask some competent person or your local technical assistance center.
