    Congratulations for the guide.

I just wanted to ask if someone have suffered one condition on hp dv2000 amd-based laptops, which is -the wireless adapter randomly dissapear from the pci devices list at random boots, so the laptop doesn’t see it doing an “lspci”-
The only workaround I’ve tried with success is just rebooting the machine as many times as I need to get the machine to “see” the device again.
It just occurred to me that maybe there is a workaround for this using some kind of weird combination of kernel boot params (I’m positive it’s a hardware problem, but sometimes it can be worked around with the magic of linux)

You can see how this is not “just me”, but a mayor issue in hp manufactured laptops here:

    Thanks JoeZ!
Talking about your issue please have a look at this link

you should first update the BIOS and the try updating also the wireless driver as described.
As you know Broadcom wireless cards are not supported by any linux driver, thus by using ndiswrapper you are enabled to use the latest up-to-date windows driver.
    Cheers

THANK YOU. I’ve been trying to get my sound working for weeks, and your backport module suggestion worked like a charm.
My next project is hibernation/suspension, but I’m rather noobish and can’t figure out how to disable Compiz.. Would someone explain it in more detail for me?
Anyway, aldeby – you are my saviour. ^^

  5. aldeby says:

:-) I’m really happy my tutorial has been of some help for you!

For what concerns hibernation it should work out of the box.

Instead concerning suspension you have first to test if it is a compiz responsability by going into
System > Preferences > Appearence > Visual Effects and select NONE.
In case it suspends correctly after that it was a compiz v-blank issue.
However even if you disable the v-blank, unfortunately there are also other issues with Gutsy, for instance you would be able to suspend only once in a session.

In Hardy Ubuntu developers have integrated a series of patches hardware-specific in a new package that hit the repositories: pm-utils, which is tightly linked to hal, the hardware abstraction layer.

For these reasons I advise you to perform an unpgrade to Hardy instead. Many features peculiar to HP Pavilion laptops are fully supported in Hardy only.
(I upgraded a Gutsy system last week with the most recent Hardy snapshot and I had to face no issues) http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

Please note you have to install the backports modules in hardy too. This time for a wireless issue on Intel based systems.

    Cheers

I am planning to upgrade to Hardy Heron as soon as it’s out of beta (which is what, next week?) Good to hear it works well with Pavilions!
I checked the Compiz: makes no difference, which is just as well because the way the windows bounce around with extra effects is worth more to me than suspension anyway. Weird that hibernation generally works; my computer can’t get past logging me out… She’s a little spechull sometimes.

  7. webaugur says:

Don’t forget that you need libstdc++5 package installed for lightscribe to work. It kinda halfway acts like it works without libstdc++5 but it will not enumerate any devices.

  8. Thiago says:

    Hello,

Very nice the report you made here. I think it would be nice if you could say something about your memory stick connection (in my hp dv6000 I have a Ricoh Co Ltd R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host Adapter). Does it work for you?

    Cheers

  9. aldeby says:

    Thanks Thiago,
I tested it with SD and MMC cards and it does work.
As far as I know MS cards are being supported for the first time with 2.6.24.

Unfortunately I have no idea with other kind of cards.
If you have the chance to test other supported formats please let me know!
