Excellent, very helpful article. On my DV2058ea with the latest firmware from HP (F39) the brightness keys don’t work, but I found a very helpful fix on the Ubuntu forums, might be helpful for some other people:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=673946
It’s for Gutsy but in my case it applied for Heron as well
. Heron did support the brightness keys in one of the beta releases but I think a kernel upgrade broke it.
Hi!
My laptop is a HP Pavilion dv6710ea. I followed the steps you indicated for the wireless
conection, but still no success…
After I write “sudo ndiswrapper -l” the output is “bcmwl5 : driver installed”, but I still don’t
have wireless internet. Any idea?
Thanks!
Hi… I use this guide to use the Wireless and the webcam and works really fine! Congratulations fot the guide… Another thing, in the wireless part, please put an suggestion in the directory of the driver, because the driver puts in the folder like DRIVER_ES, and not in the DRIVER folder, this is just a suggestion…
Thanks
P.D.: I test the guide in my DV2715NR
Glad to see it helped you!
Thanks for the suggestion, I did not actually fully understand it however I renamed the driver folder into broadcom… hope you meant it simply needed to be renamed to avoid confusion.
Cheers!
i talk about change of some lines the guide of the wireless for this lines…
Install ndiswrapper and follow the procedure:
sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper-utils
sudo ndiswrapper -i $HOME/broadcom/DRIVER_EN/bcmwl5.inf
sudo ndiswrapper -l
sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
Thanks again
P.D.: i add the folder DRIVER_EN
Thank you for the excellent tutorial. Really useful!!
To Yits:
I would recommend using the GParted LiveCD to resize your Windoze partition, it’s quite safe though I would probably recommend backing up anything important. Just leave a blank area on your hard disk for Ubuntu to install itself on, and tell Ubuntu setup to fill the space, easy!

on this model is possible install ubuntu 64bits?
linus,
of course it is possible!
Your laptop has an Intel Penryn Core 2 Duo T8100 processor which is capable running EMT64 extensions.
Here is a review in Italian (sorry but I haven’t found it in English):

Thank you so much for this. This was the most helpful thing all week!
