    2. Remove USB wakeup from Standby to work around the system may have blue screen after resume from Standby.
    DRAWBACKS:
    - Support Computrace function
    - BIOS ACPI manages in a “smart” way the C4 state (toggleable in BIOS settings). It seems C3 state is actually pointing at C4. (Why the heck is this hack needed?). As a result C4 state is not visible to the OS.

    2. Fix hot plugging the Giga LAN express card, the device will have yellow mark in device manager.
    DRAWBACKS:
    1. This update makes BIOS ACPI “smart”. It will hide C3 and C4 CPU power save states when AC cable is plugged in. However if you unplug the cable while powered on or in standby CPU still cannot enter C3 and C4 power states and thus consumes more power.
  • version F.23 REV. A

    SOFTPAQ NUMBER:  sp38793
    SUPERSEDES:  sp38510
    EFFECTIVE DATE:  March 25, 2008
    DOWNLOAD LINK
    ENHANCEMENTS:
    - Updates the fan-control algorithm for the system to reduce the likelihood of future system issues. The bottom line is that the fan always spins, whereas previously it stopped below 47°C. This manages to considerably cool down the processor.
    - The actual reason, however, is not to cool down the CPU but the GPU due to bricked nVidia GM84 and GM86 chipsets: see here for the explanations by HP and those by The Inquirer
    FIXES:
    - The BIOS “smartness” introduced with BIOS update F.22 Rev. A is reverted. Now C3 state is back available also when AC is plugged in. This enables the laptop to save more energy at an unnoticeable performance slowdown when switching between C states.
    DRAWBACKS:
    - system is more noisy and consumes a little more power (have an idea of how much?), on the other hand it is 10°C cooler.
    - C4 state is still hidden from the OS and linked to C3 state

I face a thermal policy issue on a dv9770 laptop using the F.59 bios.

The thermal switch shuts down the laptop when temperature is not really high.

HWmonitor reads low temps on CPU, HDD, GPU but THR1 close to 90 Celsious.

Reading on your post i saw a previous version of bios that lowers the alert limits (F.53)

I am wondering if i could downgrade the existing bios

    • aldeby says:

      Sir,
the CPU temperature reaching 90 Celsius degrees is indeed too much. I bet your BIOS shuts the computer down to prevent it from burning!
You can certainly downgrade your BIOS, however the changes introduced with version F.53 have been kept also in subsequent versions, this means also F.59 should have them.
I would suggest you to try cleaning your fan and radiator with a compressed air spray, if you get little or no benefits you should then consider opening your chassis and manually removing the dust in the radiator.
Despite seeming a tricky task it’s actually routine maintenance. If you don’t feel comfortable in doing that you could ask any local pc store for assistance.

      • pavlinos says:

I really appreciate your immediate answer.

I have managed to download the service manual that defines the procedure of maintenance.

Thnx a lot really great response

I have a HP Dx6700 . The laptop keeps shuting down on me when the fan gets loud. I’m assuming its because the temputure. I have cleaned the whole chassis and have also applied heat compound. I have not however updated the BIOS. Could this be my answer?

    • aldeby says:

That sounds a temperature issue indeed!
You should take care of cleaning the fan and radiator too. This could be properly done only by unscrewing the bottom case and using a air pressured spray can and a brush.
Updating the BIOS helps to keep a lower mean temperature, however would not prevent what you are experiencing.

    I have Hp DV-6700 bios f.45

I am curious if it is possible to boot from usb drive?
In bios i cannot see any such option.
After reading changelog, seems to me that it is not possible with any other updates for this bios.
What should I do if I have this wierd wish? Buy a new laptop ? :)

    • paul says:

      @Taras
I’ve booted from a USB drive running Ubuntu, you just need to set up the boot order of your laptop.

I have an HP DV2725TX and just press F9 when the BIOS screen opens. By default, the BIOS screen “timeout” is 0 seconds so you might not be able to see the instructions. You can just keep on hitting F9 as soon as you turn on your PC.

      • Taras says:

        thx for reply.
        to be clear.
In my BIOS there is no such option as ‘boot from usb’

        • paul says:

I see, sorry for the confusion. Even in the boot options under system configuration? That’s weird, most newer models have them already. In that case you might be in a stump hehe. Any luck talking to an HP rep about it?

        • Taras says:

once (year ago) I talked to HP support but they answered me that USB drive is not recognized by HP as ‘bootable drive’ (?)
Probably it meant that it is not implemented in my bios.
so I resigned from idea. Now I’ve found this forum and list of updates for my bios. Seems that nothing has changed.

    • aldeby says:

Taras, as Paul kindly pointed out I’m 100% sure you actually can boot from a USB pen drive or even USB external hard drive.
There actually is an option in the BIOS but it does not say “boot from USB”. You can find it under the Boot Sequence menu. By default you should have DVD -> Hard Disk -> other external devices -> network. You could set it to first look at external devices.

I actually would suggest you to rather follow Paul’s advice: keep pressed F9 key during bootup (I mean since the computer leds get switched on!) with the USB disk inserted. It then should prompt you with a menu in which external USB disk is an option.

For the USB disk to be bootable you have to first make it bootable, of course. This can be accomplished with several tools: the most popular being Ubuntu’s usb-creator and unetbootin (available for both linux and windows).

As a reference check this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=811397

  4. Taras says:

    Paul & Aldeby

    Thanks !!
    You were right.
The thing is I have never tried to get into bios setup with USB drive inserted. If it is not you cannot see any options related to USB (in my BIOS).
My only justification is that firsty I wanted to know if sth is possible…now I can see how wrong I was :)

  5. Naser says:

    Thanks for the great page!
I am using a HP dv6799ea, with F.58 A BIOS already. Have been trying to find a way to control my fan speed via different programs such as speedfan lately but wasn’t able to do so. I want to know if it is possible to do that any way with changing BIOS to even older versions; or trying to it manually via direct access to ACPI which is a little risky as I
Will updating to latest F.59 BIOS release help or not?
BTW, here is the links for F.59:
    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp42001-42500/sp42153.exe

Thanks for your consideration in advance.

    • aldeby says:

Thank you Naser for reporting the new BIOS!
As far as I know there is no easy way to manually control the fan speed whatsoever.
Between versions F.45 and F.51 there has been a change in the internal fan policy as I described above, however not even upgrading to latest F.59 would enable you to tweak its speed.
To be honest there actually is a way to tweak the fan speed, but involves editing the BIOS image and is tremendously unsafe…

      • Naser says:

        Thanks a lot!
I am not going to edit BIOS then, but will update to F.59 cause “Improves the performance of the SD card reader” as said in HP site.

I have read in another forum that reducing the “max power state” in “processor power management” to 70% may help. so i will stick to that and try.

        Yours
