THANK YOU!!! I am in the US Navy and got scheduled to deploy. I bought an HP dv2000 from B3st Buy and loved the integrated webcam and chat options. I quickly learned vista was 3 things. Bloated, Annoying, and completely useless and inefficient. I needed an OS that met my needs and didnt take 5 minutes to load. I thought about XP but I didnt want to mess up a $1000 laptop that I wasnt sure if there were drivers for it or not, and having the web cam was a MUST for my wife and i to communicate from 10000 miles away. I looked on google to do some research about Ubuntu, because my friend said that Ubuntu was the most popular and user friendly linux platform . What the hell why not find out if linux will run on my DV2000. aldeby.org was on the top ten list of links when i did my google search. I just wanted to thank you so very much for giving me the freedom of an OS that does what I need it to do and it does it FREE! I dont have to worry about hackers, viruses, constant updates, or lack of support. I just regret that i had to pay MS and HP for having Vista preloaded…really makes me nauseous that i even paid for it! I have only one question/complaint. Can you tell me how to get the S video to work. I have a lot of videos that i have created using various video clips from my military experiences and i would like to be able to plug the laptop into the tv and show my family the slide show on my 32 inch tv instead of my 14.5 inch monitor… Any links or tutorials would be wonderful! Thank you so much again for the wonderful tutorial and freedom.
Ciao,
Matteo
Hello Matteo, I do not speak Italian but i used ALTAVISTA BABBLE FISH to translate. From the sounds of it you are having graphical issues when you minimize something then maximize it. I have not encountered this issues yet but on my desktop i have encountered something similar with linux mint, a form of ubuntu hardy. To solve most issues what i did was use the linux driver that comes with the Hardy Distro. Go into the setting for your desktop and change effects to normal or none. That should solve your problem if you have settings set to advanced. Make sure that one you install the drivers and it asks you to restart, do so immediately. I found that sometimes that when i install ubuntu on a new system i want to install everything before restarting. It doesnt work well that way for me. I have to do the video first, restart, then go about installing all my other vital components. I hope this has helped you, if not feel free to send me more info.
Sincerely,
Tristan
ps i am sorry this is in english i hope you can translate
Thanks Tristan for the precious advice!
I’ll try to translate it back to Italian for you.
Ciao Matteo,

Installing nvidia-glx-180. the initial problem seems disapper. Unfortunately, a new one shows up with menus: passing the mouse pointer over the voices, they remain selected.
I had to fight a little with the installation: after the first reboot i had the classic screen for the video manual settings. I’ve disinstalled nvidia-glx, rebooted, reinstalled and then rebooted with good results. Can the problem be caused by this suffered installation?
Actually i have set graphical effects to none (first they was on normal). Everythings work but i think this doesn’t solve the problem but just avoids it.
Thank you for the help (and excuse me for my bad english).
P.S.: i have installed the driver adding jaunty’s restricted repository and removing it after the operation. What should i have done to select only the nvidia’s packet?
i have a dv6 1030ca pavilion laptop and am trying to run vmware 6.5, the os is vista home premium sp1 64 bit, when i try to install any software into vmware, the system terminates saying that the os doesn’t support 64 bit mode. The advice from vmware people is that the VT bit in the bios is not enabled, however the bios on the hp is phoenix and does not show any VT option. I think that hp has disabled the bios in someway. The dv6 has a core 2 duo which supports vt mode, virtualization. Have you heard anything on this or can you direct me where I can find out about if there is any way to enable this function. Without enabling this in the bios, vmware will not run and i have bought the machine for no purpose that i can use.
I also tried many times to use the contact me above and it will not submit, it say’s there is a field missing, but doesn’t say which one, even though all fields are filled in
Thanks for your patient Robert,
I now have fixed the contact form.
What OS do you use for hosting vmware? Are you sure it is Vista 64?
If Vista 64 is your GUEST OS, then ensure you have a 64 bit HOST OS, such as Ubuntu x64.
You cannot install a 64bit guest OS over a 32 bit host os!
Furthermore ensure you are are trying to setup the correct version of VMware over your host OS (i.e. 32bit VMware over 32bit host OS).
To check what kind of Linux kernel you are running type in a terminal ‘uname -m’
if the output is i686 then you are in a 32bit environment.
if the output is x86_64 then you are in a 64bit environment.
I’m not sure about your precise model, however most Pavilion laptops have the Virtualization switch into their Phoenix bioses. Mine for instance does.
In any case have a look on HP website if there is a BIOS update for your model.
Hi Aldeby
I have a hp pavilion dv3-2007tx
I have no audio when running Ubuntu, speakers nor headphones.
Perhaps it is related to the touch sensible controls. When using windows my mute button changes colour to indicate mute or unmute. When using Ubuntu the colour is locked, however Ubuntu does actually respond to the touch controls.
We are discusing it in this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1258788&highlight=hp+dv3
I am user “teapottvroof”
I am grateful for any support or hints. I would like to use Ubuntu as windows has proved itself less than ideal…
Thanks
I love you
I don’t really have a long drawn out story about it, but I’ve been frustrated to almost tears with my HP laptop, and you solve ALL of my problems on one page. I’m considering registering on the ubuntu forums so I can post your blog as a response to the mountains of unanswered questions about HP laptops I found through google.
I love you.
Hi aldeby
Please, forgive my english (I speak spanish).
I found your site looking for hp pavilion dv + linux. I find it great, really, and I believe that I will be coming around quite a lot: I have just installed Xubuntu and I see you have a lot of tips for linux+hp
Well, here is my difficulty: I installed today xubunty 9,10 and my webcam is not working. It is the 412347-001 Web camera module that mounts inside the top portion of the display panel in the hp pavilion dv1680, that comes with mic (the mic is working perfectly) and that turns a blue light on when working.
Do you know anything about that?
Thankyou
Hi fgadea!
Thankyou for writing! Your webcam should be connected via internal USB. So basically identify the webcam model with the command ‘lsusb’ (no quotes) and then have a look either on my blog or on ubuntuforums.org for the webcam string. In any case give luvcview (’sudo apt-get install luvcview’ and reboot) a try, it supports thousands of USB webcams thanks to the sole effort of a French engeneer!
